Mayan Blue Color
Maya blue was a pigment made from indigo and palygorskite clay, first identified by mineralogist H. E. Merwin in 1931 while he analyzed mural paint at Chichén Itzá. Field Museum and Wheaton College researchers date its use across Mesoamerica to about A.D. 300 to 1500. The real pigment is a bright turquoise; Mayan Blue color #006b6c is a much darker teal.

Mayan Red Color
The Maya coated temples in red pigment, but Mayan Red color (#6c4a43) is far quieter, a dark cocoa-brown with a red tint. It has more in common with the cacao the Maya drank than with their painted walls. Use it as a warm brown.
